The Southern
Group of State Foresters recently completed a multi-state wildland
fire risk assessment for the 13 Southern states that allows agencies
and organizations at the national, state, and local levels to obtain
a clearer picture of what the overall potential is for wildland
fire and its associated problems. This project is called the Southern
Wildfire Risk Assessment (SWRA).
Sanborn Map Company (Colorado Springs, CO) is the primary contractor
working with the Texas Forest Service in conducting the assessment
and establishing a technical platform for on-going use of project
data and results. Fire
Program Solutions (Sandy, OR) is the fuels and fire subject
matter experts in the project working for Sanborn.
The USDA Forest Service, Southern Region is comprised of thirteen,
(13) states known as the Southern States. These thirteen states
are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
The fire managers of the Southern Region face a complex problem
that is compounded by increasing fire intensities due to accumulation
of vegetative materials, continued residential growth into wildland
fire-prone areas, and increasing firefighting costs.
